[...] I share his views but I also now lay the blame at the feet of the musicians themselves. There is so much more they could be doing if they fully embraced the social web with a strong, well planned digital strategy. Or, as I put it in this essay – Dear Musicians, Please Be Brilliant or Get Out of The Way. [...]

When I saw the Andrew Bird "Anonaminal" video, I remember thinking, "This is essentially classical music. Who would have thought something like this would attract a young audience?" It's quite sophisticated.

http://pitchfork.com/tv/#/episode/1999-andrew-bird

Suzanne,

We obviously share similar ideas, esp around thinking creatively. You should also check this comment as I like the insights - http://j.mp/6yLySH

I don't spend a lot of thought on recorded music these days because it seems as if everything that can be said about it has been said.

But you dropped a few names in your piece that resonate for me.

David Byrne
Burning Man
Cirque du Soleil
Amanda Palmer

All represent creativity, wherever it might lead. I've been trying to look beyond music discussions to other creative fields to find operating concepts that have yet to hit music in a big way.

I'm not discouraged with the current state of affairs so much as I am interested in expanding everyone's concept of what can be done.

On the one hand, I've seen far too many musicians who still think in terms of success within very limited musical parameters. On the other hand, I have run into some musicians who are enough aware of cultural history (literature, film, art, music, theater) over the last 200 years to draw upon a wide range of references for inspiration.

As much as I like to talk about the realities of making a living in music, I also think it's holding people back from thinking creatively. If you don't view music as a source of income, but rather as a form of self-expression, creativity, and community, what would you, could you, do with it?
