We never had a longer view or attention span than we have today. This is part of the 'hindsight is golden' problem. The good old days sucked. Even more than today. We have never held the future in our hands, but we have told ourselves many times that we did. This is yet another flaw in the human mind, riddled with cognitive flaws, many of which blind us to our own distorted perceptions of ourselves and the world around us. The future is more likely to be really wonderful than really crappy, but we can't imagine that, so bring on the Terminators.
